EVENT

A high-level international event will be hosted by ASSISi in Athens, Greece, centered on seismic isolation and advanced earthquake protection technologies.

The one-day specialized technical workshop will bring together experts from Greece and beyond, including professionals, academic experts, decision-makers, industry leaders and public officials to discuss and promote seismic resilience through seismic isolation.

Part of the ASSISi Joint Event Türkiye–Greece, following the ASSISi Special Session at 8ICEES (Kuşadası, Türkiye).

SCOPE

Conventional seismic design, while effective in preventing collapse and mitigating human losses worldwide, often results in significant damage, downtime, and economic loss. Seismic isolation and energy dissipation systems offer a paradigm shift by directly reducing seismic demand, thus leading to enhanced performance related to damage limitation, rapid functional recovery, and resilience of critical infrastructure. Recent earthquakes, such as those in Turkiye in 2023, and the rapid evolution of materials, devices, and analytical tools further highlight the need for continued innovation and knowledge exchange in this field.

This Workshop will showcase recent advancements in seismic isolation and energy dissipation, with emphasis on innovative concepts, systems, and applications with the aim to:

  • Promote the concept of seismic isolation and energy dissipation of structures, showcasing cutting-edge projects
  • Offer the opportunity for hands-on training with real-life worked examples and a site visit
  • Provide a focused forum for high-quality contributions aligned with the mission of the International Association for Seismic Isolation and Energy Dissipation (ASSISi), fostering international collaboration within and outside Europe to advance the safety and resilience of structures worldwide

– Following the workshop, a technical site visit to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center* will be conducted by the engineers involved in the design and implementation of the seismic isolation system.

The event will take place at the Eugenides Foundation one of Greece’s most prestigious institutions for science, education and technology, offering state-of-the-art conference facilities and technical support.

TRAVEL

Participants interested in attending both events may travel as follows:

  • Kuşadası to Samos by ferry on Thursday, 21 May, departure at 08:15.
    Travel duration: 45 minutes. Estimated cost: €40.
    Participants may spend a few hours on Samos and then fly to Athens at 14:25 or 18:50
    (flight duration: 1 hour, estimated cost: €55).

  • Flight from İzmir Airport (approximately 50 km from Kuşadası) to Athens.
    Direct flight departing at 19:15.
    Estimated cost: €100.

Athens is accessible via Athens International Airport (ATH), with direct flights from major international hubs. The venue (Eugenides Foundation) is easily reached by public transport and taxi. Access routes and parking information are provided above.

Information on recommended hotels near the venue will be provided. Participants are advised to arrange accommodation early.
